The word cult is easy to throw and hard to earn. In 1961 the psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton set out eight criteria for ideological totalism — the conditions under which a closed system takes over a person’s capacity to think. He later applied them to political movements himself. This book applies them to Zionism, one at a time, with documented evidence against each.

A full chapter states the five strongest arguments against the book’s own position as their best advocates state them, and concedes what survives. It is not a book that asks anyone to hate themselves: its ledger of who gains and who pays does not list the Jewish people among the beneficiaries — it lists them, alongside Palestinians, among those who pay.
